The roofing felt installation guide

Roofing felt is used for making roofs waterproof. It is used to stop moisture from damaging roofs. It is a glass fiber sheet or polyester interlaced with tar and sand. Roofing felt is manufactured in rolls. In some cases, sand is applied to the inner sides to avoid sticking between the rolls and for protection against climatic changes in storage.

Here are a few tips on the installation of roofing felt

Do not walk over the roofing felt before you install it. Use appropriate safety equipment during installation. Start putting the roofing felt from the bottom of the roof. Make sure it is in horizontal layers. This helps to shed water in the rain. The first layer of roofing felt should cover the ending edge of the decking. Do not let it overhang.

Fasten the upper corner of the felt roll and spread it evenly over the roof. Avoid wrinkles and fasten it to the roof at a minimum height of eight inches. Align the next roll of roofing felt with the edge of the roof. It should overlap the first layer by at least two inches. Continue laying it on the roof in the same way and for the next layer let it overlap by four inches.

If some wrinkles are created, slice them and refasten them flat on the roof deck. Seal the gaps with waterproofing cement. Install shingles as soon as the felt installation is complete. You can get this done by a specialist. If you do it by yourself make sure that you follow instructions and read up information on the installation of roof felt layers. Complete the procedure patiently and with care.
