Tips for maintaining roof shingles

Whether you own a business or a home, good roofing is a must for safeguarding your roof. Cost should not be a factor when choosing the building material for your roof.

Neglecting maintenance with asphalt shingles is as bad for your home as with tiles and slates

The best material would be one that is easy to install, maintain and fit the building requirements. For instance, using a heat absorbing material for your roof would drastically reduce your air-conditioning bills.

Shingles are used for all types of roofing. Roof shingles are usually flat and rectangular elements, laid side by side. You must keep in mind that shingles are brittle. Hence if you need to inspect your roof, it would be advisable to use a pair of binoculars instead of stepping on the roof yourself.

Roof care

Periodic inspection of your roof is a must. If you've used roof shingles as your roofing material, look out for tell-tale signs such as tearing at the edges and curling. Each individual piece should fit against each other, tight and snug.

Debris and dry leaves should be cleared off the gutter to avoid it from being clogged. Fit in gutter guards if needed. Tree branches venturing over the house should be trimmed. If there is absolutely no other option and you must see the roof up close, use shoes with rubber soles.

You should always inspect your roof in the aftermath of a heavy storm. Look out for water leakage and loose shingles.
