Athlete Matt McLaughlin

JJ Roofing Supplies are extremely proud to sponsor Matt McLaughlin who is one of Great Britain’s up and coming middle distance talents. Britain’s indoor junior 1500m record holder, Matt has the speed to start breaking onto the senior scene within the next few seasons.

Matt specialises in the 800 and 1500 metres. He represents Woodford Green A.C. with Essex Ladies and trains at Lea Valley Athletics club where he is coached by Ayo Falola.

2013 has been a fantastic year for Matt and has seen him selected to represent Team GB over 1500 metres in Rieta Italy for the European Junior Championships and run in his first Diamond League senior race.

Matt’s aspirations for the rest of this year are to break 3:40 for 1500m and 1:49 for 800m which he believes will be a tough task. For next season Matt is looking to qualify for the World Indoor Championships and achieve Commonwealth qualifying times for the 800 or 1500 (1:45.3 and 3:35).

1500m Mens Under 20 - British Junior Indoor Record for Matt 3:42.87 (January 2013)

Matt started steadily and settled into a solid pace, keeping with his gameplan as some of his opponents hit the front at, almost, a full sprint. Staying close to the back for the first three laps, Matt began working his way through the pack, picking off his competitors as he went, after the fourth lap, he was sitting at the back of the leading group and at the start of the final half lap, Matt changed pace once more and kicked down.

The pace was simply too strong for his opponents and Matt’s sprint was perfectly timed, enabling him to catch and then sail past them. The change of pace was reminiscent of Mo Farrah in full flow and was so dramatic that Matt had taken the lead within about 10 metres and as he rounded the bend for the final straight, the leading group was spread out, with only one other runner even getting close to Matt as he crossed the line in a new British Junior Indoor 1500m record time of 3:42.87.
